Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) consist of three main types, plus a mobile series:
- PC based Digital Video Recordersuse commercial grade PC hardware incorporating video capture, video multiplexing, video (and optionally, audio) recording and playback, video display and remote video access.
- Windows™ Embedded DVRsuse commercial grade PC hardware however software, including Windows ™is contained on solid state memory, offering faster boot up speeds as well as a higher degree of security and reliability.
- Embedded DVRsdo not use a Windows™ operating system and contain no software at all on the hard disk(s). All application functions are contained (embedded) in firmware (software encoded on chips).
- Mobile DVRs are typically embedded systems meant specifically for use in vehicles. They incorporate anti-shock and anti-vibration mountings and generally have 12V DC power inputs.
